<![CDATA[ Gamesradar+ ]]> https://www.gamesradar.com Wed, 22 May 2024 08:27:33 +0000 en <![CDATA[ Dark Matter showrunner says star Joel Edgerton came up with *that* big change from the book ]]> Warning: Dark Matter episode 4 spoilers below!

Dark Matter creator and showrunner Blake Crouch says it was Joel Edgerton who came up with the show's biggest change from the book.

"About two years ago, shortly after we had cast Joel Edgerton, we met in LA for a Dark Matter 'summit' for four days to go over the first four scripts and to talk about the rest of it. It was an idea that Joel had – it really changed, in a lot of ways, the depth of the show," Crouch tells GamesRadar+.

"He said, 'I think that Jason shouldn't just be trying to get back to this perfect world. It would be so much more powerful for me playing this character if he wants to get back to his family, even in spite of like, some pretty intense trauma that happened in that family's history.' And it was such a brilliant note. It was one of those light bulb moments and it didn't just affect one thing. It affects the whole middle part and end of the show and gave it a depth it wouldn't have had otherwise."

The series is an adaptation of Crouch's novel of the same name, which stars Edgerton as Jason Desson, a scientist and family man who gets kidnapped by an alternate-universe version of himself. In the novel, Jason's family consists of his wife Daniela and his son Charlie – and he spends the duration of the book trying to find a way home to them. In the series, we learn that Jason had two children: Max and Charlie.

After Daniela gave birth to the twins, Max suffered complications and passed away during surgery. The heartbreaking addition to the story does exactly what Edgerton said it would do: it makes Jason's journey that much more meaningful. It drives home the point that Jason's idea of utopia is anywhere his family is, and it contrasts with Jason 2's more sinister, selfish nature.

Dark Matter episode 4 is streaming on Apple TV Plus. For more, check out our chat with Blake Crouch about helming his own novel adaptation.

<![CDATA[ X-Men '97 is so popular that Marvel is ramping up development on its X-Men movie with Hunger Games screenwriter ]]> Marvel Studios is wasting no time capitalizing on the big success of its X-Men '97 animated revival series by reportedly hiring a writer for its Marvel Cinematic Universe X-Men reboot movie. Taking the reins on the script is Michael Lesslie, who is hot off penning the Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie (another big revival/reboot of a major franchise, of course).

And Marvel is specifically tying the accelerated movement on the long awaited film to the popularity of X-Men '97, according to Deadline who initially broke the news.

X-Men '97 wowed critics and fans alike by threading the needle of appealing to adults who grew up with the original series as well as new fans who are just getting into the X-Men by tackling some serious topics with philosophical care and eye-popping animated action.

And of course, a healthy dose of what X-fans love most, some soapy but all-too-relatable character drama.

Meanwhile, July's Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios' only movie this year, is also an X-Men revival, with Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine in a very '90s style costume. The movie will also bring back several other mutants from the original X-Men movie franchise.

Marvel Studios is also in the midst of filming its Fantastic Four reboot movie, which has recently been rounding out its cast with a few big actors in unnamed roles, as well as some major characters such as Galactus.

The film rights to both X-Men and Fantastic Four were previously controlled by 20th Century Fox, which is now of course simply 20th Century Studios, having been purchased by Disney, the parent company of Marvel Studios.

Frankly, Marvel could do a heck of a lot worse than leaning into the '90s X-Men aesthetic for their big revival movie, as long as they handle with care a la X-Men '97.

There is no director or actors attached to Marvel Studios' X-Men movie just yet.

<![CDATA[ Bill Skarsgård has a sword for some reason in new look at controversial The Crow reboot ]]> Lionsgate has released a new look at The Crow, starring Bill Skarsgård as the titular hero.

Aside from the classic makeup, both the trailer and images we've seen thus far look nothing like the original 1994 movie starring Brandon Lee or the 1989 comic by James O'Barr (though I, a mega fan of both, am still excited regardless). Though the film has received backlash thus far for its tone, visuals, and overall use of the character Eric Draven which has not been touched since Lee's death, many fans are keeping their hopes high.

In the new still, Skarsgård's Eric Draven appears to be wielding a traditional samurai sword. Both the original pic and comic feature an array of different weapons, with the final battle of the film using a broken-off weather vane as a sword - but there isn't any of the samurai variety. The new image (as well as the trailer) gives us John Wick vibes more than anything,

The cast includes FKA Twigs as Shelly Webster, Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Bim, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger. Rupert Sanders directs from a screenplay penned by Zach Baylin (Creed 3, Gran Turismo) and Will Schneider (Return to Silent Hill). Shirley also has writing credits on the new pic.

The Crow hits theaters on August 23, 2024, pushed back from its original June 7 release date. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2024 and beyond, or, skip straight to the good stuff with our list of movie release dates.

<![CDATA[ The Rock looks unrecognizable in first look at new sports drama from Uncut Gems director ]]> A24 has unveiled the first look at Benny Safdie's The Smashing Machine, which stars an unrecognizable Dwayne Johnson.

The upcoming sports drama is a biopic that follows the life and times of former wrestler and mixed martial artist Mark Kerr. Kerr was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and an NCAA Division I Champion, among dozens of other accolades and accomplishments. The film takes its name from the 2002 HBO documentary The Smashing Machine, which explored both his career and tumultuous personal life.

The cast includes Emily Blunt as Dawn Staples, Lyndsy Gavin as Elizabeth Coleman, Oleksandr USyk as former mixed martial artist Igor Vovchanchyn, and Ryan Bader as Kerr's coach Mark Coleman. The film is currently in production and is expected to wrap on August 1.

"Benny wants to create, and continues to push the envelope when it comes to stories that are raw and real, characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable and arresting," Johnson told Variety, explaining that the biopic is unlike anything he's done before. "I'm at a point in my career where I want to push myself in ways that I've not pushed myself in the past. I'm at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter, that explore a humanity and explore struggle [and] pain."

The Smashing Machine does not yet have a release date. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2024 and beyond, or, skip straight to the good stuff with our complete list of movie release dates.

<![CDATA[ First look at Game of Thrones star in a much-loved drama's third season ]]> The BBC and HBO have released a bunch of first look images at season 3 of popular business drama Industry, welcoming back season lead Harry Lawtey and introducing series newcomer Kit Harington.

In one of the images (shown above), we can see Lawty sitting next to the Game of Thrones star in what looks to be the back of a red-lined vintage limo, both dressed in the series’ usual business wear dress code. Harington’s character Henry Muck is giving Lawty’s Robert Spearing a stern look, which gives us an idea of the type of man Muck may turn out to be. See more first look images below.

Created by filmmaking duo Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, Industry is a drama set in the unrelenting world of London’s financial district "following a group of young bankers as they forge their identities within the pressure cooker environment and sex and drug-fuelled blitz of international bank Pierpoint & Co’s London office," writes The BBC in a press release.

The first season premiered in 2020, followed by season 2 in 2022, earning the show an impressive 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 3 now looks to be the drama’s biggest installment yet following the young bankers as they find themselves looking to invest in a green tech energy company led by "old money privileged" British aristocrat Lord Henry Muck.

Industry’s returning cast includes Lawty as well as Myha'la Herrold as Harper Stern, Marisa Abela as Yasmin Kara-Hanani, Ken Leung as Eric Tao, Conor MacNeill as Kenny Kilbane, Sagar Radia as Rishi Ramdani, Indy Lewis as Venetia Berens, Adam Levy as Charles Hanani, Sarah Parish as Nicole Craig, Trevor White as Bill Adler, and Elena Saurel as Anna Gearing.

Aside from Harington, newcomers include Sarah Goldberg as Petra Koenig, Miriam Petche as Sweetpea Golightly, Andrew Cavill as Lord Norton, Roger Barclay as Otto Mostyn, Fady Elsayed as Ali El Mansour, and Fiona Button as Denise Oldroyd.

<![CDATA[ Anora review: "Another hugely enjoyable ride from Sean Baker" ]]> Anora had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Here's our review...

Writer/director Sean Baker (The Florida Project, Red Rocket) takes another walk on the wild side with this no-holds-barred comedy-drama. Anora, or Ani (Mikey Madison) as she prefers to be called, is a Brooklyn lap dancer who gets embroiled with Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), the brattish son of an oligarch who’s partying like there’s no tomorrow before he has to return to Russia.

Ivan hires Ani to be his ‘girlfriend’ for the week; they get on famously and he proposes, albeit partly so he can stay in the States. Hopping over to Vegas, the pair get married, but as soon as Ivan’s parents find out, trouble erupts.

Enter Ivan’s dad’s fixer Toros (Karren Karagulian) and two goons, Igor (Yuri Borisov) and Garnik (Vache Tovmasyan), who try to force the spirited Ani into an annulment. Things get even crazier as Ivan does a runner and the others are forced to scour the seedier side of town, trying to find him before his parents arrive from Russia. Needless to say, Ani’s fairy tale is in serious danger of turning sour.

Despite an increasingly hysterical second act, as Ani fends off Igor and Garnik, Baker controls the narrative with real aplomb, crafting a time-bomb mix of physical comedy and high drama. Better still, the final third alights on real pathos: with Ani left to fight her corner, Baker delivers a sly commentary on the self-entitlement of the rich and powerful. Principally driven by the electric Madison (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Anora is a robust look at the haves and have nots and the gulf in between.

Anora's release date is currently TBC. For more upcoming movies, here's our guide to 2024 movie release dates.

<![CDATA[ A first look at Lord of the Rings star’s new adventure-comedy is here – and fans are all saying the same thing ]]> The first look at Bookworm, an upcoming adventure-comedy starring Elijah Wood, has arrived – and Lord of the Rings fans are all saying the same thing about his character's appearance.

Per the official synopsis, "11-year-old Mildred's world is turned upside-down when her estranged father, the washed-up magician Strawn Wise comes to look after her and agrees to take her camping to find a mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther." The washed-up magician is none other than Wood, who dons a mustache and long scraggly hair in the pic.

The image has many Lord of the Ring fans joking that Wood should play Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum as they look strikingly similar. Though no plot details have been revealed, a 2009 fan-made movie of the same name gives us an idea of the story, which can be found in the appendices of the original Lord of the Rings novel. In the story, Gandalf the Grey, fearing that Gollum may divulge information about the One Ring to Sauron, sends Aragorn on a quest to find him. There's been no official word as to whether Viggo Mortensen will return as Aragorn in the pic.

"Elijah as Aragorn and cast Viggo as Gandalf! Let's confuse the shit out of everyone," one fan joked on Reddit.

One fan took the suggestion into serious consideration, writing, "He was too young looking 20 years ago, but at his age now I could see him pulling it off."

And of course, because Wood is wearing a wig...several fans linked to the infamous prank Lord of the Rings interview that goes viral just about every other week.

Bookworm is set to release on October 3. The Hunt for Gollum is set for a 2026 release date. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2024 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ Pirates of the Caribbean producer confirms two new movies are in development – including the Margot Robbie film ]]> The future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise just got a little bit clearer – producer Jerry Bruckheimer has offered an exciting update that not one but two new movies are in development.

"It's two different movies," Bruckheimer told Entertainment Weekly, referring to a reboot penned by Jeff Nathanson and a separate film scripted by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson, which would be the mysterious Margot Robbie project that was previously thought to be scrapped. "We hope to get 'em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too," he added.

"We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would've been really cool, but I guess they don't want to do it," Robbie said back in 2022, seemingly laying the project to rest.

Bruckheimer, though, said in the same year that the project was still on: "It's alive for me. It's alive for Disney. I'm sure she was disappointed it didn't go first – or maybe not because she's very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit. We believe we'll get it made. It's a very strong story."

It remains to be seen just what happens next in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, then, but one thing does seem to be for sure – we're getting more movies.

<![CDATA[ The Shrouds review: "A dry, disappointing effort from David Cronenberg" ]]> The Shrouds had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Here's our review.

In 2022 David Cronenberg returned after an eight-year hiatus with Crimes of the Future, a twisted, sexually charged tale containing echoes of the body-horror-fixated work of the Canadian auteur’s earlier films. The Shrouds, his latest movie, is morbidly obsessed with the body too, but only in its decomposing state.

Vincent Cassel takes the lead as Karsh, a man still processing the loss of his beloved wife Becca (Diane Kruger), who was taken by breast cancer. In tranquil surroundings, Karsh has founded a restaurant with an adjoining high-tech cemetery. Each gravestone has digital screens, allowing loved ones to observe the corpse of those they’ve buried, slowly decaying in real time. With cameras inside the coffins, you can even have pictures transmitted to your phone. It’s an intriguingly grim idea, typical of Cronenberg, but one that never truly takes flight in an overly talky story that tells as much as it shows.

In what feels like a nod to 1988 Cronenberg classic Dead Ringers, Kruger also plays Becca’s identical twin sister Terri, to whom Karsh grows close over the course of the film. Becca was previously married to IT engineer Maury (Guy Pearce, deliciously down-at-heel); further intrigue is generated by Karsh’s relationship with an elegant-looking blind woman and by an attack on the cemetery that has possible political and environmental motivations.

All of which, alas, adds up to very little in a film that muses on life, death, grief and the forces that move us in decidedly muted fashion. Cassel, who was far more vigorous in his earlier Cronenberg collaborations (Russian-gangster tale Eastern Promises and Freud/Jung saga A Dangerous Method), handles his role well enough, but can’t really bring either the character or the film to life. A rather uninvolving conspiracy plot doesn’t exactly help matters, nor the drably efficient visual palette. (DoP Douglas Koch also lensed Crimes of the Future.)

As ever, Cronenberg leaves you with much to chew on, but dramatically The Shrouds feels rather inert, as if it can’t get out of second gear. At least Kruger gets to show range with her dual performance, demonstrating what an underrated talent she is. But as a Cronenberg film, The Shrouds is unlikely to trouble anyone’s list of his best films.

The Shrouds' release date is currently TBC. For more from Cannes, here's our Megalopolis review and our The Substance review.

We've also got a list of all of the upcoming horror movies that should be on your radar.

<![CDATA[ M. Night Shyamalan worked as a second unit director on his daughter’s debut horror movie ]]> As Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut horror movie The Watched nears release, the filmmaker says that she was inspired by growing up on her father's sets, and reveals he even shot some second unit footage for her new film.

"He actually shot a bunch of the second unit on my movie, so that was a really wonderful role reversal," Ishana Night Shyamalan tells Total Film in our new issue about working with M. Night Shyamalan. And while The Watched marks her feature film debut, Shyamalan tells us she has a lifetime of experience behind her from being around her dad making films like The Village, The Sixth Sense, and Signs. "I grew up on his sets!" says Shyamalan, adding that her father's presence on her movie set was both focusing and calming.

The Watched follows an artist (Dakota Fanning) who is stranded in an untouched forest in western Ireland, with the only shelter being a room with a large window. Once in, she becomes trapped along with three strangers who inform her the room is watched every night by mysterious creatures whom she cannot see, but they can see her. The film, titled The Watchers in the US, is based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine. See an exclusive new look at the film above.

Shyamalan shares that her inspirations for the film are wide-reaching. "I’ve been inspired by the more visual filmmakers, like Wong Kar-wai; I love the way Tim Burton plays with creating visual spaces," she tells Total Film. "Tone-wise, I was very much inspired by this sense of nature horror, just kind of using the things that exist in environments to create suspense," also naming both Kaneto Shindô’s classic historical horror Onibaba and Lars von Trier’s Antichrist

In terms of creating the perfect shot, she looked to none other than Steven Spielberg’s epic Jaws which taught her "that the premise of keeping a threat off-camera is one of the most frustrating and scary things you can do." In that respect, it sounds like the shark movie is quite similar to her debut which centers around being stalked like prey, as she adds, "The idea that you’re being observed by something that you can’t see, that you don’t know what it is, is a very, very scary thing."

The Watched is released on June 7. And you can read more about it and a whole lot else besides in the new issue of Total Film when it hits shelves and digital newsstands on Thursday, May 23.
